Tesla’s Cheapest Car Still Too Expensive for Most Indians Despite Duty Cuts

Tesla is preparing to enter the Indian market, but affordability remains a major challenge for potential buyers. According to a report by CLSA, a leading global capital markets firm, even with India reducing import duties on electric vehicles to below 20%, Tesla’s most affordable model is expected to cost between ₹35 lakh and ₹40 lakh. This price range puts the vehicle beyond the reach of most Indian consumers, limiting its potential market.

The Indian government recently introduced a policy to attract global EV manufacturers by lowering import duties, aiming to boost the country’s shift toward sustainable mobility. However, even with these tax relaxations, Tesla’s pricing remains significantly higher than mass-market EVs currently available in India. Local electric car manufacturers such as Tata Motors and MG Motor offer models priced between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh, making them a more practical choice for the average Indian buyer.

One of the primary reasons for Tesla’s high pricing in India is the continued reliance on imports. Unlike other global automakers who have localized production to cut costs, Tesla has yet to set up a manufacturing plant in India. The company has expressed interest in establishing a factory in the country, but as of now, its cars will be imported, attracting additional costs despite the duty reductions.

While Tesla’s entry is expected to boost India’s premium EV segment, industry experts believe the brand’s success will depend on further price adjustments and potential local production. Indian consumers are highly price-sensitive, and with limited charging infrastructure, the demand for high-end EVs remains niche. Unless Tesla introduces a more affordable model or accelerates plans for a domestic manufacturing unit, it may struggle to compete in the broader market.

Despite these challenges, Tesla’s arrival is still seen as a positive development for India’s EV ecosystem. The company’s presence could drive technological advancements, improve charging infrastructure, and encourage competition in the premium EV segment. However, for Tesla to become a mainstream choice for Indian buyers, significant cost reductions and localized production will be key factors in shaping its future in the country.
