Is Amazon Quietly Letting Go of Employees? ‘Silent Sacking’ Reportedly Follows a Five-Phase Strategy

Recent reports suggest that Amazon is employing a discreet approach to reducing its workforce, referred to as ‘silent sacking.’ This strategy allegedly consists of a five-phase plan that aims to gradually push out employees without overtly announcing layoffs. As companies continue to adjust to post-pandemic economic conditions, this tactic has raised concerns among employees about job security and transparency within the company.

The ‘silent sacking’ process reportedly begins with subtle changes in an employee’s workload or responsibilities. In the first phase, employees might notice a reduction in tasks, decreased involvement in key projects, or diminished opportunities for advancement. These initial changes may go unnoticed but serve as early indicators of the company’s shift in focus.

In subsequent phases, employees may experience more overt signals, such as exclusion from important meetings or communication breakdowns with their managers. These actions, though indirect, create a sense of alienation, which can lead to job dissatisfaction and an eventual resignation by the affected employees. This quiet departure allows companies like Amazon to reduce headcounts without the public fallout that comes with formal layoffs.

Phase four of the alleged strategy often involves performance-related actions, where employees might face unfair or disproportionate scrutiny. This phase aims to create a paper trail, documenting perceived underperformance to justify termination if needed. Employees in this phase are encouraged to either improve their performance or seek opportunities elsewhere.

The final phase results in employees either resigning or being formally let go. By following this five-phase plan, companies can achieve workforce reductions without the negative press and employee morale issues typically associated with mass layoffs. However, such tactics have sparked debates around ethics and employee treatment, as workers grapple with the uncertainty of their future within these organizations.
